Your First Soap and Brush Kit: What You Actually Need

By Caisson Shaving Co.

Caisson Bohica Blend shaving soap with a lathered 24mm synthetic brush and travel container.

Your first soap-and-brush setup can be simple: shaving soap, a brush, water, and a razor you already know how to use. You can add a bowl if you want one. You don't need to replace everything in the bathroom before your first lather.

Start by checking what a kit actually contains. “Shaving kit” can mean very different things from one seller to the next.

What comes in a Caisson soap and brush kit?

Each Caisson soap and brush kit contains:

  • One 4 oz shaving soap in your chosen scent, in its screw-top aluminum tin
  • One 24mm synthetic shaving brush
  • A travel container for the brush

The kit does not include a razor, razor blades, a bowl, or aftershave. Keep that in mind if you're buying for someone who doesn't already have a razor.

The current kit price is $30. Bought separately, the soap is $15 and the brush is $25, so the kit saves $10 at those prices. If you already own a brush you like, buying just the soap costs less than buying another whole kit.

Choose the soap by scent preference

You don't need to pick a scent based on how tactical the name sounds. Pick what you want near your face in the morning.

Check the ingredients on the individual product page before choosing, particularly if there's something you know you need to avoid. Unscented describes the scent option; it doesn't promise that every skin type will tolerate every ingredient. Stop use if irritation occurs.

What does the brush add?

A brush gives you a way to pick up soap, work it with water, and spread the resulting lather. Our 24mm synthetic brush can build lather on wet skin or in a bowl.

You can also use Caisson soap with wet hands. That makes the brush a choice about how you want to prepare your shave, rather than a requirement every time you use the soap.

What can you skip at the start?

  • A new razor. Try the soap with the razor you're comfortable using. Change one part of the routine at a time.
  • A dedicated shaving bowl. You can load the brush on the soap and build the lather directly on wet skin.
  • A second brush. Learn what you like about one before buying another.
  • A collection of scents. Start with one. A five-scent inventory inspection can wait.

If you're buying a gift and don't know the recipient's scent preferences, ask. A favorite fragrance note is a more useful clue than guessing from the name on the tin.

Plan the space you need after the shave

Think about drying as well as packing. After use, pour standing water out of the soap tin and let the surface dry before closing it. Rinse the brush thoroughly and let it air-dry somewhere ventilated. The travel container is for packing the brush once it's dry.

At home, leave enough room around the brush for air to circulate. Before a trip, pack dry gear where possible. When you unpack, take the brush out of its container rather than leaving it closed away until the next shave.

A simple first-shave plan

  1. Wet the area you're shaving and dampen the brush.
  2. Load the brush on the soap.
  3. Build the lather, adding a little water at a time.
  4. Use your usual razor according to its instructions. Reapply lather before another pass.
  5. Rinse, then give the soap and brush time to dry.

If you need both pieces, choose a soap and brush kit. If you've already got the brush covered, start with the soap collection. Buy what your routine needs and get on with the shave.
